The very first inhabitants of Almere took up residence in the city’s brand new district of Almere Haven in November 1976. A few temporary shops providing daily necessities was all they had as Almere consisted of nothing else but sand flats and construction sites.
Today, Almere is home to more than 185,000 people living across four urban districts. A new glittering city centre has recently evolved, providing tens of thousands of square meters of splendid shops and entertainment facilities to residents and visitors alike.
Almere is not only working hard on its recreational facilities, but is also making its mark as a university city and business centre. More than 130,000 square meters of office space is currently being constructed right next to Almere Centrum station and the existing World Trade Centre. Four university and higher education courses are now available in Almere and student flats are also being built.
Whichever way you look at it, it’s possible in Almere!
